 Concepts of Selling

  "Is Sales For Me?"

By Scott Andrews, Founder of AspireNow

Is sales for me?

People often wonder if they should be a salesperson.  In the past twelve years of selling, I occasionally wondered the same thing myself.  Fact is, there is a simple acid test you can give yourself to bring clarity to the question of whether or not sales is for you.

First, we may pray and ask Spirit or God for clarity in the matter.  We have an entire series of articles and content about Life Purpose that might help you in determining this question.

Second, we may become mentally and physically quiet.  In doing so, our intuition is stronger.

Third, we can review a series of questions and listen carefully for the answer.  Our intuition will not mislead us.

The questions I suggest for the checklist follow:

1.  Am I interested in talking to people about my company?

2.  Does the product excite me?

3.  Can I achieve my financial goals through this career?

4.  Do I use a process of selling?

5.  Am I excited to get up in the morning to go to work?

6.  Do I want to grow my network of friends and associates?

7.  Is my productivity high in this position?

8.  Do I see myself being happy selling this product or service?

9.  Does the company have a unique selling idea or story for products and services?

10.  Does the company offer unique advantages over their competitors to buy?

11.  Can I see myself doing this job for the next year?

These questions all lead to a better understanding of whether or not sales, or at least the current position you are considering, is for you.

Whether you are currently selling or considering selling, the process mentioned above will be helpful by determining if you can answer "yes" to these types of questions.  If the answer is "no" or "maybe" you might want to spend more time praying, pondering or brainstorming about why those answers apply to you.

Sales is a career designed for people who want to the ability to set their own time schedule, grow earnings through a base + commission risk/reward strategy (usually, the risk is not high if the company has a good product or service), strategize on how to achieve goals and then succeeding in blowing objectives out of the water.

Keep in mind that good salespeople are not born, they are made.  And, just about everyone, at some point or another, will sell something.  Sales, despite it's negative stigma, is an exciting occupation that involves people skills, communication, negotiation, presenting, listening, and language techniques which can be a highly rewarding career.
